Feathery Forest
Maarkedal, Vlaanderen
Located in the heart of the Flemish Ardennes, our cosy but roomy forest cabin is surrounded by beech and oak trees, and by all the creatures who live below and in them. There is plenty to do in the area, but you can also choose to just stay inside and do nothing but read and rest by the fireplace. Profits from the cabin go to the rescuing and rehabilitation of abandoned, lost or rescued animals.
The cabin
The cabin sleeps four people and features one separate bedroom and a mezzanine above the living room (half-open). The living room features a firestove, a seating area looking out over the forest, and a large dinner table. There’s a fully equipped kitchen, also with a view over the forest. There is one small bathroom with shower.
The forest
The cabin is situated in our private forest of 2.5 hectares – our own house is 150 meters away. There’s wildlife and rescued animals, and you might be visited by Lolita, one of our cats, or some of our Spanish rescued dogs (we have four Podencos). We’ll gladly introduce you to our animals and tell you their stories.
The environment
In the hilly landscape of the Flemish Ardennes, you can hike and bike to your heart’s content. Within walking distance is the Muziekbos (“Music forest”), and a bit further on are Brakelbos and Kluisbos, as well as many other forests. The “Tour of Flandres” is the undisputed crown jewel in the Flemish cycling year, and many of its most famous ascents are nearby.
The cosy and small town of Ronse is about five kilometers away. It has a basilisk with a famous crypt, many beautiful Art Nouveau houses and a folklore and textile museum. Just outside its center you’ll also find all major grocery chains for convenient shopping. A bit further away is Oudenaarde.
Belgium is so small that nothing within it is ever far away. The historic cities of Ghent, Mons, Tournai, Lille… are all one hour or less by car. Bruges and Brussels are about 75 minutes away.
Food
We don’t offer food, but you have your own kitchen, and there’s restaurants in the area. It would be wrong to say this is the walhalla of plant-based dining, but there are some decent options around! We’ll be glad to make recommendations.
